Quiet Night In? Here Are Beauty Treatments You Can Do At Home
by The First Refresh
You’ve found yourself in the middle of a free afternoon, or a spare evening. There’s no work to be done, or no kids to take care of. Here’s when you have some time to indulge in that much-needed self pampering.
Here at The First Refresh, we know how exhausting it can be when life gets in the way. Maybe the last thing you want to do is leave the house for a spa day, or you can’t (soon-to-be mummies, we see you!).
Thankfully, in our digital age, there is no shortage of ideas on beauty treatments you can do yourself at home - light a scented candle, put your diffuser on, and try out a DIY facial or mask. We’ve compiled a list of the best treatments you can do for yourself at home, as well as our other favourite treat-yourself activities.
A DIY exfoliant scrub:
Exfoliating your skin once to twice a week helps remove dead skin cells to improve skin texture and brightness. The best part about a DIY exfoliant scrub is that you probably already have all the ingredients in your kitchen cabinet! This could also be an activity you do with your kids if they would like to join in on the fun.
The popular choice for at-home DIY scrubs is an oatmeal scrub - using water, oatmeal and egg whites. Add in some sweet almond oil for extra moisturising benefits.
Another scrub to try is a coffee scrub - caffeine is a great natural source known to stimulate blood flow and reduce puffiness. You can mix some coffee grounds with a bit of honey for maximum results. Leave it on for 10 minutes, then wash it off.
Make a clay mask:
There are various types of clay that you can find at the pharmacy - each with different masking benefits. What better way to treat yourself than with a fresh mask made from scratch! Some clays you can consider are kaolin or bentonite. Add a few drops of tea tree oil and mix in with rose water for a refreshing home-made clay mask.
Give yourself a face massage:
Face massages are in - and for good reason. Invest in a face roller or guasha tool for at-home face massages. The cool stone soothes and lifts tired skin, relieving any tension in your facial muscles. Pull out your face rollers and guashas while you cosy up to your current favourite Netflix show. If you’re curious to know more, read more about facial rollers in our previous blog post here!
Alternatively, why not gift yourself a facial? Mobile, at-home beauty services make it easy for you to get professional beauty treatments without having to leave the house. Try out one of The First Refresh’s facials - and add on a rose quartz lifting massage.
Give your nails some love in between your nail appointments:
In between mani-pedis or waiting for your next appointment? Why not take some time to strengthen your nails and cuticles, giving them some extra pampering before your next mani-pedi.
Nail-strengthening treatments are available off the shelf resembling your regular polish. These usually contain a protein and calcium-rich cocktail that promotes healthy nail growth.
Give yourself a mani-pedi
Giving yourself a mani-pedi is a quick way to give yourself that much needed little pick-me-up. While you wait for your face mask to set, giving yourself that mani-pedi will help you make the most of your quiet night in.
Take it a step further - if you want to leave it to the professionals, our Nail Oasis comes straight to you on-demand, and includes a relaxing foot soak. Take it a step further and make it a girls night in with our Nail Party - a flexible group mani-pedi service.
Curl up with a good book or catch up on your favourite Netflix show
Sometimes when it all gets overwhelming, the respite we need dearly comes in the form of escapism. Silence your phone and curl up with a good book, or, catch up on some episodes of your favourite Netflix show.
Run a bath
After a long week, an evening of self-pampering wouldn’t be complete without a bath. Run yourself a warm bath to relieve the tension in your body, and give yourself that time to relax and recuperate.
Try a hair mask
Like our exfoliating and moisturising masks, you can make hair masks at home too. Hair masks need ingredients you may already have, such as coconut oil, baking soda, aloe vera and apple cider vinegar.
The powerful moisturising properties of coconut oil do wonders for your hair, while also nourishing your scalp. This will help to prevent frizz, split ends and dandruff. Massage coconut oil into your hair and leave to sit - shampooing it out later.
Baking soda is a great ingredient to give your scalp and extra cleanse from residue that may have built up from styling products and natural oils. Mix in a couple teaspoons of baking soda to your shampoo and leave for a few minutes - thoroughly rinsing it all out.
Make a cup of tea - or a smoothie - or both!
Soothing herbal blends do wonders after a long week of work or mom duties - brew your favourite tea to help you relax. If you’re looking for a new one to try out, we recommend heather or verveine tea.
Healthcare is self-care - make a fruit smoothie to replenish your energy and clear any brain fog, detoxing from the inside out.
